The Chase‘s Bradley Walsh shocked everybody by having the bestselling debut album last year, outselling even Zayn Malik. Yes, really.
However, it seems the surprise was a delight to Simon Cowell, who apparently congratulated the TV presenter turned crooner.
“I just laughed when I found out,” Bradley told The Guardian his album Chasing Dreams‘ surprise success. “I thought it was hysterical. I am probably the oldest new artist Sony has ever signed.”
He added: “Zayn’s former One Direction bandmate] Niall Horan was sending me messages, laughing his head f. And I got big congratulations from Simon Cowell. He thoroughly enjoyed it.”
Simon and Zayn have not exactly seen eye-to-eye late, with the X Factor judge recently slamming the former One Direction star’s decision to make a TV show about a boyband.
However, Simon’s also had a go at other members 1D in the past, so it’s all a bit a sore spot still…
Bradley went on to discuss the secret to his success as an all-rounder, explaining: “It’s just about being an entertainer; it’s about having all those tools over the years to do all sorts: films, musicals, playing a bit piano, running a quiz show – it just becomes part the job.
“Years ago, there were shows such as Opportunity Knocks, now it’s Britain’s Got Talent: back then, it was working men’s clubs, now it’s cruise ships.”
He also argued that – apart from Adele and Ed Sheeran – younger artists are more focused on looking cool, and forgetting “proper old-fashioned tunes”.
